ENOTECA LA FORTEZZA TROPHY
DISTANCE
14 KM
ELEVATION GAIN
650 M+
START DATE
FEBRUARY 21, 2027
START
PIAZZA DEL POPOLO – 10:45
The 14km ENOTECA LA FORTEZZA TROPHY is the shortest competitive race of the Brunello Crossing. Despite the shorter distance the course is no less challenging, the 650m+ of positive elevation gain concentrated between forest trails and cart tracks provide a nice challenge for trail runners of all levels.
The three competitive races, 45 km, 24 km, and 14 km, will start from the central Piazza del Popolo, crossing the historic center. Exiting through Porta al Cassero, one of the 6 gates allowing access to the city, adjacent to the 14th-century Fortress built in the highest part of the medieval town.
Traversing through woods, vineyards of Brunello di Montalcino, villages, and farms, the route leads to the Banfi Castle – Poggio alle Mura, whose first nucleus was built before the year 1000, commanding a strategic position for controlling the confluence of the Orcia and Ombrone rivers.
The course momentarily leaves the Val d’Orcia to ascend to the small medieval village of Sant’Angelo in Colle. Another descent into the valley and then a climb towards Ventolaio (aptly named!), where the Brunello Crossing 45 route rejoins with Brunello Crossing 24.
A steep descent called “il Patataio,” with a breathtaking view of the Val d’Orcia and the backdrop of Mount Amiata, takes athletes through another medieval village: Castelnuovo dell’Abate. A few hundred meters further, they reach the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a Romanesque church where Charlemagne, returning from Rome via the Via Francigena in 781, initiated the construction of the monastery.
Leaving behind the monastic complex, with a continuous alternation of woods and vineyards, the route ascends towards Il Cocco, one of the highest points of the entire course, where the Brunello Crossing 14 route also joins before continuing towards Montalcino. Athletes enter the town through another old gateway: Porta Cerbaia, proceeding along the main street to the finish line in Piazza del Popolo.
