PIAZZA DEL POPOLO – 10:00
The CAMIGLIANO 24km TROPHY is one of the competitive races of Brunello Crossing, a mid-distance challenge to be tackled with determination to conquer the half marathon distance. The race starts from Montalcino, exploring the territories of Brunello. Among the most characteristic places, you will pass through the small village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a distinctive Romanesque church.
The three competitive races, will start from the central Piazza del Popolo, crossing the historic center. They will exit through Porta al Cassero, one of the six gates allowing access to the city, adjacent to the 14th-century Fortress, built in the highest part of the medieval town.
Crossing through woods, vineyards, home to Brunello di Montalcino, villages, and farms, the route will reach the Banfi Castle – Poggio alle Mura, whose first nucleus was built before the year 1000, imposing on a strategic hill for controlling the confluence of the Orcia and Ombrone rivers.
The path momentarily leaves the Val d’Orcia to climb towards the small medieval village of Sant’Angelo in Colle. Another descent into the valley and then a climb towards the Ventolaio (by name and in fact!), where the Brunello Crossing 45 path rejoins with Brunello Crossing 24.
A steep descent called “Il Patataio,” with a breathtaking view of the Val d’Orcia and the backdrop of Mount Amiata, brings athletes to cross another medieval village: Castelnuovo dell’Abate. A few hundred meters and you reach the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a Romanesque-style church where Charlemagne, returning from Rome through the Via Francigena, initiated the construction of the monastery in 781.
Leaving behind the monastery complex, with a continuous alternation of woods and vineyards, the route ascends towards Il Cocco, one of the highest points of the entire course, where the Brunello Crossing 14 also joins before continuing towards Montalcino, entering the town through another old city gate: Porta Cerbaia, to travel the main street until reaching the finish in Piazza del Popolo.
